Bollywood strike casts a long shadow in New York

New York, A seven-week-old strike by Bollywood film producers that has brought India’s multibillion-dollar film industry to a halt has also cast a long shadow on small ethnic movie theatres in the US.


The Eagle Theatre, a little cinema hall in Jackson Heights, Queens in New York, is shut tight, its steel burglar gate pulled down and its marquee blank, battered and dark, the New York Times reported.

“The cause of the theatre’s untimely closing - like many things that happen in this bustling immigrant neighbourhood - lies not in New York but clear on the other side of the planet,” it said.

The Eagle specialises in first-run Bollywood movies, and without a supply of new films, theatres like it around the world have had to screen old ones, dip into the pricier …

Dev Patel to play villain in new film

London, After playing an underdog in “Slumdog Millionaire”, Dev Patel is all set to play a negative role in his new film “The Last Airbender”.


The 19-year-old has gone for a mean look quite opposite to his character in the multiple-oscar winning film “Slumdog…”, reported thesun.co.uk.

In the film, which is based on an animated TV series about warring elements of Air, Water, Earth and Fire, Dev will essay the role of a character called Zuko.

It would be fun to do a Bollywood movie: Kylie Minogue

London, Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue is taking drama lessons and says it will be fun to do a Hindi film.


The singer, who was recently in India to shoot a dance sequence for the Hindi film “Blue”, is keen to re-start her acting career, reported themirror.co.uk.

“I’m taking some acting courses to brush up on my skills. They are going well, but the thought of going in front of an audition panel again scares the life out of me,” said Kylie.

“I think it would be fun to do a Bollywood movie,” she added.

In the 1980s, the 40-year-old had acted in an Australian soap, but for the last couple of decades she has stayed away from acting.

New Delhi, He came from a humble background and burst on the Bollywood music scene with the song “Allah ke bande”. Now Singer Kailash Kher is all set to go global with his third album “Kailasa Chaandan Mein” and says international recognition is “encouraging”.

Music baron Gulshan Kumar’s killer nabbed in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant, convicted killer of Bollywood music baron Gulshan Kumar, has been nabbed by Bangladesh police that is ascertaining his possible links to an arms haul case.


Merchant is believed to be part of the gang of notorious Indian fugitive Daud Ibrahim Kaskar who Bangladesh suspects of being involved in the shipping of Chinese arms to Chittagong in April 2004 for the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

Merchant, 37, was detained early Thursday by a team of detectives in Brahmanbaria, a town close to the Tripura border in north-eastern India.

He was supposed to have entered Bangladesh illegally from Akhaura and acquired a Bangladeshi passport under the name of Shomar Patel, the Daily Star said Friday.

Getting waxed for ‘Paying Guests’ was torture: Shreyas Talpade

New Delhi, Talented actor Shreyas Talpade plays a woman in debutant director Paritosh Painter’s “Paying Guests” and says getting his hair waxed for the role was extremely painful. He vows not to play a woman in near future.


“Getting waxed for the role was a torture for me. It was like being in a delivery room. I was yelling like a mad dog while I was getting waxed. Even my wife Deepti got scared. She was with me when it was being done,” Shreyas told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

“I told Paritosh to cover me completely for the part and that there shouldn’t be any revealing clothes because I wanted to escape the waxing part. But he told me to get it done to avoid last minute goof ups. Though I got it done, it literally made me shriek like anything,” he added. …

Parminder Nagra becomes a mother

Los Angeles, Actress Parminder Nagra, who is married to photographer James Stenson, gave birth to son Kai David Singh Stenson.


The 33-year-old-actress, who first rose to fame with her role in the film “Bend It Like Beckham”, gave birth to her son May 19. Nagra and Stenson announced the pregnancy in December and were married the following month after being together for seven years, reports people.com.

The actress also played Neela Rasgota on NBC’s Emmy-Award winning medical drama “ER”.

IIM don sees economic philosophy in Bollywood flicks

New Delhi, Now playing at a theatre near you: lessons in economic philosophy. A professor with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) has found two Bollywood hits to be much more than song-and-dance entertainment.


Tejas A. Desai, an assistant professor who has done his PhD in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina, has analysed Mani Ratnam’s ‘Guru’ (2007) and Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Corporate’ (2006) in detail in an IIMA working paper.


The two films are ‘explicitly about the world of business and the people who inhabit it’, he writes in the paper.
