‘Indian Idol’ prince of northeast Amit Paul

amit paulShillong, From politicians to actors, people from all streams of life in the northeast are rooting for Shillong singing sensation Amit Paul to make him the next “Indian Idol” in a much-watched reality television contest.

The 24-year-old singer is now in the top five of the highly-rated “Indian Idol” musical show on Sony TV where one contestant is eliminated based on the least number of votes received on SMS or through phone calls.
Leading the bandwagon for supporting Amit is Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang.
“We have conferred him the honorary title of Meghalaya’s ‘Brand Ambassador’ to foster peace, communal harmony, and excellence,” the chief minister told IANS.
Lapang on Wednesday participated at a function here - organised by music lovers and several socio cultural groups - to drum up support for Amit.
“We are all proud of Amit for the success and fame he has attained so far. His achievements have helped people from all walks of life and communities to come together, and this aspect clearly reflects that music has no cultural barriers,” the chief minister said.
Giant hoardings and posters with Amit’s photographs have sprung up across Meghalaya asking people to vote for him.
“There is a frenzy all over the place with the catchword now being Amit and only Amit. Some members of his fan club have opened a free telephone booth for people to vote for him, while an Internet café has also been set up exclusively to vote for Amit,” said K. Mawlong, a local singer.
Amit fever is also catching up in adjoining Assam with at least a dozen of the state’s leading actors and singers organising a street campaign to garner votes for the Shillong youth.
“Amit is the pride of the northeast and we should all rise to the occasion and vote for him,” said Munin Baruah, a noted Assamese filmmaker.
Amit has been into singing since his childhood and had quit studies to pursue a career in singing - he can sing in six languages making him the darling of the “Indian Idol” judges.
Another youth from Assam, 29-year old Debojit Saha, had earlier won Zee TV’s “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005″ earning him the coveted title “India’s Voice”.

Rajasthan judge refuses to hear Salman’s bail plea

salman khanJodhpur, Rajasthan High Court judge G.K. Vyas Wednesday refused to hear jailed Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s revision and bail pleas and ordered that it be transferred to another bench.

Vyas did not hear the actor’s petition as he was earlier the counsel for the forest department in all poaching cases against the star.

Salman has already spent four nights at the central jail in Jodhpur. The celebrity prisoner, who was sentenced to five years in prison for hunting an endangered deer nine years ago in a village near here, surrendered himself to Rajasthan Police Saturday following an arrest warrant.

In his plea, Salman has stated that there was no evidence against him in the case and his driver Harish Dulani’s testimony in court was not trustworthy, as he has been changing his statements frequently.

Salman has been convicted of poaching a chinkara deer at the Ghoda farm near Jodhpur on the night of Sep 28, 1998, while filming Sooraj Barjatya’s blockbuster “Hum Saath Saath Hain”.

On Friday, the district and sessions court here had dismissed the actor’s plea against the five-year jail term handed by the chief judicial magistrate’s court.

In April last year, Salman had filed an appeal in the district and sessions court against the judgement of the lower court. The court had found Salman guilty under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Muzamil Ibrahim can’t act under woman direction

muzamil irahim

New Delhi, Actor-turned-director Pooja Bhatt, who’s currently having a face-off with Muzamil Ibrahim starring in her upcoming film “Dhokha”, says he is a chauvinist who can’t take a woman giving him instructions.

“Muzamil is a chauvinist and he can’t cope with the fact that he is being directed by a woman,” Pooja told IANS.

“It is not my nature to be personal. Fundamentally he is not a bad person … the problem is the background from which he comes. He has studied in a boys’ school and hasn’t come out of the shell as yet.

“We have worked with so many newcomers … Muzamil is the only unpleasant experience we have had,” she maintained.

“Dhokha” deals with the issue of terrorism and its incalculable spiritual costs. And model-turned-actor Muzamil plays the role of Zaid Ahmed, a bright, young Muslim police officer.

Muzamil had earlier stated in leading newspapers that “Pooja Bhatt does not exist for me”, even though it was she who had given him an entry into Bollywood as a hero.

Pooja, who has churned out films like “Paap” and “Holiday”, pointed out that it took a lot of blood and sweat to work with budding actors.

“Working with newcomers is like teaching a child how to walk. You can imagine, we shot ‘Dhokha’ in 38 days while we did 40 days of rehearsals before shooting.”

Pooja has a finger in many pies - she has wowed audiences as an actress in films like “Daddy”, “Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi” and “Tamanna” while she writes columns for newspapers too. Apart from producing films like “Dushman” and “Zakhm”, she also turned production designer in “Jism” and “Rog”.

Pooja, who once hosted a TV show “Mere Saath Chal”, said she wasn’t keen on entering the small screen again.

“Television is most regressive for my taste. There is more in the life of women than plotting and planning against family members, contrary to what is showcased in the saas-bahu sagas. And I wouldn’t portray women in this light in my film or serial.”

Sharing her future plans, Pooja said she would love to venture into the world of animation and fantasy if given a chance.

“Animation is timeless! It can make a grown up feel like a child and is beyond boundaries. I would also love to make fantasy films like my grandfather Nanabhai Bhatt did,” Pooja said.
