‘Gandhi My Father’ shows strained father-son relationship

Gandhi My FatherNew Delhi, Veteran theatre director Feroz Abbas Khan is ready with his first feature film “Gandhi My Father”, an emotional historical drama that depicts the strained relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his eldest son Harilal.

Releasing Friday, the film stars Akshaye Khanna, Bhumika Chawla, Darshan Jariwala and Shefali Chaya. It shows Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, in a completely different light - the film shows Gandhi’s family life and how his values and conviction soured his relationship with his eldest son Harilal.

Based on Chadulal Dalal’s book, the film has Akshaye in the role of Harilal and Darshan is cast as Gandhi. Bhoomika plays Harilal’s wife Gulab and Shefali will be seen as Kasturba.

The film focuses on the emotional aspect of Gandhi’s life and shows how his indifference towards his family turned Harilal into a rebel. He converted to Islam, reconverted to Hinduism and finally drank himself to death.

Six months after the assassination of his father, Harilal died in Sion hospital. He was alone. Harilal carried his Gandhi identity as a curse around his neck.

Khan, who has made a successful play on the same subject titled “Mahatma vs. Gandhi”, was intrigued by Gandhi and wanted to explore his human side. Driven by curiosity, he did extensive research and his findings motivated him to make the film about a principled father and an unfortunate son.

Produced by Anil Kapoor, the film was screened in New York and earned a lot of appreciation. Sans any masala, the film might be a revelation to many

Kher Jr wants work to speak for itself

Sikandar KherBuzz in the industry has it that director J.P. Dutta is eager to cast Sikander Kher in the next project that he plans to embark on soon. But ask Sikander and he chooses to remain tightlipped about it. Insiders insist that Dutta has liked Sikander and does plan to cast him in his next venture. Sikander simply says, “It is too early to say anything.”

The topic then veers to Woodstock Villa that marks his debut as an actor. The film also marks the debut of Neha Oberoi, daughter of producer Dharam Oberoi. “My first film was a learning experience for me. I have a long way to go as an actor,” he says. But being the son of stalwarts like Anupam Kher and Kirron Kher the expectations are definitely high and Kher Jr’s answer takes you by surprise.

“I welcome expectations. They bring the best out of me. I am not troubled by them. I know that my acting skills will be compared to them, but over a period of time, I have to create an identity of my own. And it is then that they will be known as my parents and I am sure that will be a proud moment for them as well. Also my parents have always encouraged me. They have helped me pursue my endeavours and have told me that they are always there for me, no matter what. I am eternally indebted to them,” he says.

Sikander adds, “My parents have also warned me that acting is not an easy task and that I have to be prepared to work hard. And that is what I am doing with utmost sincerity. But I don’t want to say anything right now. I want Woodstock Villa to speak for itself.”

Actors have dhamaal with pizzas

While shooting for director Indra Kumar and Ashok Thackeria’s Dhamaal, the cast of the film had several funny moments. In a crucial scene, the gang of four lovable rogues —Arshad Warsi, Aashish Chowdhury, Javed Jaffrey and Riteish Deshmukh — is supposed to steal pizzas from their landlady. On being busted, they have to throw it up on the ceiling to hide their mischief.

However, these four pranksters ate up all the pizzas before the shot could be taken. The producer had to order more pizzas at the last minute, which delayed the shoot.  Ashish says, “We had two kinds of pizzas, some were artificial and magnetic so that when we threw them, they would get stuck to the ceiling. Others were real. And without realising what we were doing, we started eating the real ones.”

He adds, “Our director Indra, was shocked when he realised that there were no pizzas left for close-up shots. Poor Ashok had to order more pizzas for the shoot. Initially we thought that they would be very angry but, thank God, they just laughed it off.”

Fardeen’s career set to look up again

Fardeen KhanFardeen Khan’s films have been flopping one after the other, be it Pyare Mohan or Just Married. But the buzz doing the rounds is that Anuj Saxena’s Dulha Mil Gaya is Fardeen’s big ticket to Bollywood where he is the lead actor and has a prominent role in the film.

He gets to share screen space with Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen for the first time. Fardeen is said to be thrilled with this move as this will be the first time that he will be seen with the heavyweights of Bollywood.  This sort of casting surely works in Fardeen’s favour as Shah Rukh and Sushmita are definite crowdpullers. There is no doubt that their names in the credits will play a huge role in attracting some attention towards Fardeen as well.

Though he is a talented actor, Fardeen has not yet been able to successfully carry the responsibility of a film singlehandedly. This has also led to him opting for several multi-star films of late. However, now that he is breaking into the “A-list” of the industry, let’s hope the film brings him better offers.  Shah Rukh has yet to start shooting his scenes for the film though he has shot for his entry song two months ago at Mehboob studio

Chandra may rope in Madhuri again

Madhuri DixitDirector N. Chandra is ready with his next venture Breaking News. “It will be ready for release by the end of August. I have always been making issue-based films. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I fail. It’s not a new subject though it’s an unusual script,” he says.

The director completed the film in one and a half months. “The film is about the world we live in and the biases we garner in life. Topics such as casteism, Hindu-Muslims stereotyping, migrants etc. have formed the core of the film. The movie also shows that ultimately only humanity survives, nothing else. It is an absolute entertainer. I have wonderful actors like Anupam Kher, Rajat Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Perizaad, Atul Kulkarni, Vijay Raaz and Seema Biswas playing various parts in the film. Sarika plays the role of a socialite,” he elaborates.

What about Tezaab 2, we ask. “Yes I am working on the script right now,” he says.  Does he plan to sign Madhuri Dixit for the sequel? “I’ve not thought about it. I have to ask her. She was a very talented actress and was one of those who took her career ahead with this film. If she refuses, I’ll have to look for someone of her calibre. But I am confident I’ll satisfy my critics,” he says

Rahul, the first Indian to be picked by Oxfam, joins the elite company of actresses Scarlett Johansson, Helen Mirren and singer Annie Lennox who are also associated with the NGO.

“It’s flattering and very gratifying to be among the names that you’ve mentioned. What better birthday gift could I hope for?” said Rahul, when asked about the other celebrities.

Rahul, who also stars in the sequel to Pritish Nandy’s “Pyar Ke Side Effects”, turned 40 on July 27.

“I got a call from Oxfam asking me whether I’d like to be their global ambassador. I readily agreed. Being attached to a global organisation can only increase the scope and impact of my social causes,” Rahul told IANS.

“They’re working very well for women and children. It’s very gratifying to know that the work, which you’ve been silently doing, has somewhere been so profoundly appreciated.

“I had been working with Oxfam for two years, post-tsunami in the Andamans. I’ll just continue working in the same direction, even harder,” he said.

‘Sholay’ was screened on DVD without subtitles, rues Hema

Sholay The MovieMumbai, The scarcity of proper prints to honour Bollywood stars at international retrospectives has a come to light once again. Ramesh Sippy’s historic potboiler “Sholay” almost couldn’t make it to the retrospective of Hema Malini’s films at the Bangkok International Film Festival.

Remembering the unfortunate incident, Hema told IANS: “They screened ‘Sholay’ on a DVD and without subtitles. Nobody could get a hand on the print. So they just blew up the DVD print and projected it on the screen.

“Nowadays, every Hindi film is immediately subtitled. I guess it wasn’t so easy back then. We need to do something about this right away.”

In 2005, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan had to abandon the idea of taking “Sholay” for a retrospective to the Lincoln Centre in New York. He, however, had refused to allow the film to be screened on a DVD.

It’s generally felt that the authorities need to get more alert over the ready availability of films for such retrospectives.

“My brother handled the whole thing here while the embassy in Bangkok monitored everything from there. Our Indian ambassador Lata Reddy in Bangkok took very keen interest in my retrospective.

“It was very difficult to locate the prints of my films. Now that the Hindi film industry is becoming popular all over the world, we need to have a bank of every artiste’s films ready for international events. The authorities should take every artiste into confidence and select 10 of his or her best films.”

The 10-day film festival started on July 19 in Bangkok. The Thai papers are crammed with complimentary reports on Hema’s sojourn.

“The reports were very flattering. All part of my past glory,” she laughed. “A retrospective means I’m part of the past, right?”

The festival was organised in a centrally located multiplex.

“But I left Bangkok after ‘Sholay’. Indians came from all over South Asia. And they seemed quite excited to see me. There were many big stars from Asian cinema.”

Now she’s back in Chennai.

“I went to meet my daughter in Pondicherry where she’s shooting for a film called ‘123′,” said Hema who might have another retrospective in Moscow in September.

“The Russians are very fond of my films like ‘Alibaba Aur Chaalis Chor’ and ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. I wonder if I’ll be able to get the prints!”

Vishal Bharadwaj all set to make songless film

The Blue Umbrella Movie

Mumbai, Director Vishal Bharadwaj, whose “The Blue Umbrella” is releasing Aug 10, has decided to put his untitled international war epic on hold as it is taking too much time. He has now decided to make a film that will have no songs.

“It will be a film without songs, a very real docudrama kind of subject,” Bharadwaj told IANS.

“How will I make a film without music? I’ll worry about the impact when it’s released. Right now I just want to do the film that has come to my mind.”

“As for the World War II film, yes it’s very much on. But the film requires a huge canvas, huge budget and an international cast. The casting is taking a lot of time, much longer than we thought. I’m still in negotiation with Hollywood actors.”

Has Uma Thurman been approached?

“Yes, she has been approached. But she hasn’t made up her mind. I’m letting the producer go ahead with the casting of the World War II film while I’m going ahead with another film because I need to get back behind the camera by December 2007 or January 2008.”

About “The Blue Umbrella” he said: “I’m not stressed about this film because it’s a very simple and innocent story. No one can hate it.

“I’m not worried about my credibility. Of course, it was made before ‘Omkara’. I’ve matured since then. The ‘Blue Umbrella’ was made in a different frame of mind.”
